InternetExplorer (formerly MicrosoftInternetExplorer and WindowsInternet Explorer, commonlyabbreviated IE or MSIE)is a series of graphical webbrowsers developedby Microsoft and included as part ofthe Microsoft Windows lineof operating systems, starting in 1995. It wasfirst released as part of the add-on package Plus! forWindows 95 that year. Later versions were available asfree downloads, or in service packs, and includedin the OEM service releases of Windows 95and later versions of Windows.

Standards supportInternet Explorer, using the Trident layout engine:- Supports HTML 4.01, HTML 5, CSS Level 1, Level 2 and Level3, XML 1.0, and DOM Level 1, with minor implementation gaps.- Fully supports XSLT 1.0 as well as an obsolete Microsoftdialect of XSLT often referred to as WD-xsl, which was looselybased on the December 1998 W3C Working Draft of XSL. – Support forXSLT 2.0 lies in the future: semi-official Microsoft bloggers haveindicated that development is underway, but no dates have beenannounced.- Almost full conformance to CSS 2.1 has been added in theInternet Explorer 8 release. The trident rendering engine inInternet Explorer 9 in 2011 scored highest of in the official W3Cconformance test suite for CSS 2.1 of all major browsers.- Supports XHTML in Internet Explorer 9 (Trident version 5.0).Prior versions can render XHTML documents authored with HTMLcompatibility principles and served with a text/html MIME-type.- Supports a subset of SVG in Internet Explorer 9 (Tridentversion 5.0), excluding SMIL, SVG fonts and filters. Non-standard extensionsInternet Explorer has introduced a number of extensions to theDOM that have been adopted by other browsers. These include theinnerHTML property, which provides access to the HTML string withinan element; the XMLHttpRequest object, which allows the sending ofHTTP request and receiving of HTTP response, and may be used toperform AJAX; and the designMode attribute of the contentDocumentobject, which enables rich text editing of HTML documents. Some ofthese functionalities were not possible until the introduction ofthe W3C DOM methods. Its Ruby character extension to HTML is alsoaccepted as a module in W3C XHTML 1.1, though it is not found inall versions of W3C HTML. FaviconThe favicon (short for “favorites icon”) introduced byInternet Explorer is now also supported and extended in otherbrowsers. It allows web pages to specify a 16-by-16 pixel image foruse in bookmarks. In IE, support was, and still is, provided onlyfor the native Windows ICO format; in other browsers it has nowbeen extended to other types of images such as PNG and GIF. Usability and accessibilityInternet Explorer makes use of the accessibility frameworkprovided in Windows. Internet Explorer is also a user interface forFTP, with operations similar to that of Windows Explorer. Pop-upblocking and tabbed browsing were added respectively in InternetExplorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7. Tabbed browsing can also beadded to older versions by installing MSN Search Toolbar or YahooToolbar. CacheInternet Explorer caches visited content in the TemporaryInternet Files folder to allow quicker access (or offline access)to previously visited pages. The content is indexed in a databasefile, known as Index.dat. Multiple Index.dat files exist whichindex different content—visited content, web feeds, visited URLs,cookies, etc.Prior to IE7, clearing the cache used to clear the index butthe files themselves were not reliably removed, posing a potentialsecurity and privacy risk. In IE7 and later, when the cache iscleared, the cache files are more reliably removed, and theindex.dat file is overwritten with null bytes.Caching has been improved in IE9. Group PolicyInternet Explorer is fully configurable using Group Policy.Administrators of Windows Server domains (for domain-joinedcomputers) or the local computer can apply and enforce a variety ofsettings on computers that affect the user interface (such asdisabling menu items and individual configuration options), as wellas underlying security features such as downloading of files, zoneconfiguration, per-site settings, ActiveX control behaviour andothers. Policy settings can be configured for each user and foreach machine. Internet Explorer also supports Integrated WindowsAuthentication.
